How Our Mulching Services Process Works
- 1
Bed preparation
Beds are edged, weeded, and cleared of debris before any mulch goes down, so the new layer sits on clean, defined beds.
- 2
Old-mulch assessment
Matted or overly deep old mulch is loosened, reduced, or removed so water and air can still reach the soil beneath the fresh layer.
- 3
Depth-controlled installation
Mulch is spread at an even, consistent depth across every bed — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering plants.
- 4
Trunk and stem clearance
Mulch is pulled back from tree trunks, shrub stems, and siding. Piling mulch against trunks ("mulch volcanoes") traps moisture and invites damage, so we never do it.
- 5
Final cleanup
Walkways, driveways, and lawn edges are blown clean and all prep debris is hauled away before the crew leaves.
Best Timing in Central Ohio
- SpringMarch – May
Refresh mulch in spring after beds have been edged, weeded, and cleaned up — prep first, then mulch.
- SpringMarch – May
Apply mulch at a 2–3 inch depth. Excess mulch traps moisture and can damage plant crowns and stems, and it should never be piled against trunks.
- SummerJune – August
On central Ohio's clay soils, mulch's key value through summer is moderating soil-moisture swings between rain and heat.
What Affects Your Price
- Bed square footage
- Total bed area drives the cubic yards of mulch required — the largest cost input.
- Mulch type and color
- Hardwood, dyed, and premium mulch varieties carry different per-yard prices.
- Bed prep and old-mulch removal
- Heavy weeding, edging, or removing matted old mulch adds labor time.
- Edging linear footage
- Longer bed edges take more time to cut in cleanly.
- Access and haul distance
- Tight access or long wheelbarrow runs from the delivery point slow installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of mulch do you offer?
We offer premium hardwood mulch in natural brown, dyed black, and dyed red. We also offer cedar mulch for pest-deterrent properties. All our mulch is sourced from reputable local suppliers.
How deep should mulch be applied?
We recommend 2-3 inches of mulch for most applications — the depth Central Ohio lawn-care guidance converges on for moisture retention without smothering roots. Annual refreshes often need only topping up to that range. We never pile mulch against tree trunks or plant stems.
When is the best time to mulch?
Spring (April-May) is the most popular time to mulch as it prepares beds for the growing season. Fall mulching (October-November) helps protect plants through winter. We recommend annual mulch refreshes to maintain the benefits.
How often should mulch be refreshed in Central Ohio?
Most beds benefit from an annual refresh. Mulch breaks down over the season, so a yearly top-up keeps the depth consistent, the color fresh, and the weed suppression working.
Do you remove the old mulch first?
Not always. If the old layer is thin and breaking down, we loosen it and top-dress over it. If it has matted or built up too deep, we reduce or remove it first so the total depth stays healthy for your plants.
What does mulch installation cost depend on?
Bed square footage, the mulch type and color you choose, how much bed prep and edging is needed, and access for delivery and spreading. A quick walkthrough is enough to firm up a quote.
Do you clean up after mulching?
Yes — beds are edged and weeded before installation, and walkways, driveways, and lawn edges are blown clean before we leave. Prep debris is hauled away.
